Stop Saying This Season Doesn’t Count

You can’t convince me that this season doesn’t matter.

SERIOUSLY, STOP IT!

Earlier in the morning the Giants DFA’d utility infielder Pablo Sandoval. I posted the news to a Facebook page I follow. The post was showered with comments about how it’s horrible on the part of the Giants front office, (which it’s not) Yeah, he helped the Giants win three World Series rings in the past, BUT HE SURE AINT HELPIN ANYMORE. The excuse that was made by a lot of the “keep Pablo people” was that this season doesn’t even count, so we should have held onto him until the end of the year in respect to him. This way, he doesn’t end his Giants career getting DFA’d in the middle of the season.

Let me think, ughhhhh NO

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. The season doesn’t even count???? Ask Pablo Sandoval if the season counts. I bet you, after getting DFA’d his answer would be “ughh hell yeah it counts.” If the season didn’t count, maybe the Giants would have held onto Sandoval until the end of the year. I mean I doubt it, but maybe. And who cares anyway, the season counts. The Giants are a better team without Pablo Sandoval in their lineup.

If this season didn’t count, why would we be playing?

That’s the question that I haven’t been able to come up with an answer to. Oh no wait, I’ve got one I’ve got one, we wouldn’t be playing. The Padres haven’t been in the playoffs in like 400 years, they’re playing out of their minds right now, think this season matters to them? The Yankees are the 8th seed in the American League. They were a World Series or bust team, and now they might not even make the playoffs!?!? Yeah, I bet these next 2–3 weeks matter to Aaron Boone and company. Weren’t the Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles supposed to be two of the very worst teams in baseball? Well, they aren’t out of it. They both still have a real shot to make the playoffs. THINK THE SEASON MATTERS TO THEM!

Obviously 2020 is different, the biggest difference is that we’re only playing 60 games, but there’s a lot more than just that. We’ve got Covid, so multiple teams have missed games and have to make them up in the form of double headers. Speaking of, this year double headers are only seven inning games. Extra innings? Let’s change that too, both teams now start with a runner on second base if they head into extra innings. What else what else, there’s the universal DH now, no more pitchers are hitting. Another big one is all of the players that elected not to play due to concerns of Covid. No David Price, no Lorenzo Cain, Buster Posey, Ryan Zimmerman, Marcus Stroman, I could keep going, but I think you get the picture.

We’ve established that it’s different

So why do so many feel that just because this year is different that it doesn’t count? I can’t put my finger on it. I do imagine they are the “earth is flat” kind of people, because there’s no reason to believe that this season doesn’t count or that the earth is flat other than the fact that you’re an idiot. We need to understand that all this year is, is different. At the end of October we’ll see a team hoisting the trophy over their heads. There won’t be fans there, but a team will still win and forever be known as World Series Champions. So what if there is an asterisk next to the winning teams name. There should be, this year is so far off from a normal year. The asterisk won’t mean that the title doesn’t really count. It will represent how this year was different, that’s all.

If this season doesn’t matter to you, then just don’t watch it. Sit at home without baseball on, feeding your kids dry ass pork chops and cottage cheese. Yeah, I’m saying people that think this season doesn’t count overcook pork… Come at me. I on the other hand will be glued to my TV for every game down the stretch. I’m obviously a Giants fan and we’ve still got two series against the Padres, one with the A’s, Rockies, and Mariners, definitely not a cake walk. We own the 7th seed currently and at the very least will have to play .500 ball moving forward to stay in the playoffs. Now, that sure as hell matters to me.
